Youth Writing Competitions, 2016

Patriot’s Pen / Voice of Democracy

It’s the time of year again for two of our favorite youth writing competitions, Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy, geared to showcase the patriotism of today’s students!

Patriot’s Pen, Grades 6 - 8
Theme: The America I Believe In

    300 to 400 word original essay

Voice of Democracy, Grades 9 - 12
Theme: My Responsibility to America

Entrants are eligible for cash prizes. All entries and applications must be turned in to your local VFW Auxiliary (Patriot’s Pen) or VFW Post (Voice of Democracy) by the deadline NOVEMBER 1.

Each year we are amazed at the insight of our youth through their inspired entries. We look forward to see what students will express this year!

Fundraiser Dance - July 16, 2016

Kick up your heels and join Lockport VFW Post 5788 for another night of fun and music, with musical guest Strait Southern!

$5 covers your entrance fee plus one free draft/soda. Food will be available for purchase. Proceeds will go to programs that support our veterans. There will also be great raffle baskets and 50/50 raffles!

Memorial Day Observance, Crest Hill, 2016

Please join the City of Crest Hill Veterans / Police Memorial Committee in their annual Memorial Day Observance, honoring Veterans and Police Officers who have given their lives to ensure freedom. The Observance will be held Monday, May 30, 2016, at the Crest Hill Veterans Memorial Garden, 1610 Plainfield Road, Crest Hill, Illinois, at 2:00 p.m.

The guest speaker at the Observance will be Mr. Scott E. Pointon, Veteran U.S. Marine Corps. Music will be provided by soloist Anna Mae Lukancic and the Frankfort Brass Band, under the direction of Michael Orenic. The program will last approximately 45 minutes and chairs will be provided for all. Refreshments will be served following the program.

This will be the 28th anniversary of their Veterans Memorial Garden. Please join them in this gracious invitation.

Romeoville Sam's Club Memorial Day Breakfast 2016

Sam’s Club, 460 S. Weber Road in Romeoville, is hosting a Memorial Day Breakfast for veterans and active-duty military personnel on Thursday, May 26, from 8 to 9 am. Please RSVP by Monday 5/23/16 to Patty or Maureen at 815-221-4739.

In addition, Sam’s Club Romeoville will give a $25 gift card to active and retired military persons joining or renewing a Sam’s Plus membership, or a $15 gift card to those joining or renewing a Sam’s Savings membership. A Welcome Package with various coupons is also included.

Military Appreciation Night, May 28, Dirt Oval at Route 66 Raceway

Take time out from your Memorial Day weekend and come out Saturday, May 28, for a “Tournament of Destruction” at the Dirt Oval at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet. May’s event theme is “Military Appreciation Night,” and wearing camouflage is encouraged!

All military will be given a $2 ticket discount. You must present your Military ID to receive the discount. Team Demo has graciously allowed the 5788 Auxiliary to fund-raise with Buddy Poppies and Koozies, along with distributing information about Veterans programs, during this event.

The parking lots open and the pre-race party starts at 4 pm, with gates opening at 5:00 pm. The event starts at 7:15. Fireworks are included! We were there last year, and it is a great time with a friendly and enthusiastic crowd!

Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Wreath-Laying Ceremony

All are invited to attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The ceremony will be held at the cemetery on Tuesday, March 29 at 9:00 am. Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is located at 20953 W Hoff Rd, Elwood, IL 60421.

The ceremony is a special tribute to Vietnam War Veterans, but will honor all veterans who have offered so much in the pursuit of peace. A 50th-anniversary pin is available to Vietnam War Veterans upon request.

Be Cool with Fundraiser Can Coolers, 2016!

Introducing the 2016 VFW-themed can coolers! Available in royal blue, red, and forest green, our new design remains collapsible, able to be flattened for storage or transfer when not in use. Both sides of the coolers show a tribute to our faithful military, with “Thank a Vet” in white.

Young American Art Contest, 2016

Creative Patriotic Art Scholarship

It’s time again for high-school-age artists to put on their Creative and Patriotic thinking caps and put brush (or pen, or chalk, or a variety of specified art media) to paper/canvas!

The Creative Patriotic Art scholarship is a VFW-Auxiliary-sponsored youth competition for students in in Grades 9 through 12. Students create a work of art with a patriotic theme, choosing from a variety of specified art media. The art will be no smaller than 8" × 10" and no larger than 18" × 24", not including a mat. Each entry will be judged on the originality of concept, presentation, and patriotism expressed; the content of how it relates to patriotism and clarity of ideas; the design technique; total impact of work; and uniqueness. Entrants are eligible for cash prizes.
