Greenlight A Vet!

America’s veterans are some of our nation’s bravest, hardest-working men and women. Help show them the appreciation they deserve with the Greenlight A Vet campaign, a visible, national support movement for our veterans.

Simply change one light to Green in a visible location and keep it shining every day as a symbol of appreciation and support for our veterans. Then, if you wish, share your support by taking a picture of your Green light and posting it using the hashtag #greenlightavet.

Keep a Green Light Shining!

Turkey Bucks / Ham Bucks

The Holiday season is rapidly approaching and it’s time to spread cheer through the gift of giving. Lockport’s Jewel-Osco has partnered with Lockport VFW Post 5788 and American Legion John Olson Post 18 to help support veterans and their families in need. We are calling on you to help us make a difference.

Volunteers will be able to solicit donations at the store, 16625 W. 159th St., from now through the holiday season. Volunteers need not be members of the Posts. Post-affiliated and supported groups (Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts) are welcome to help and earn community service hours.

We are asking volunteers to work for an hour or as long as they desire. We can collect outside the entrances or in the store at the entrances or exits, during the store's business hours. Simply go to the Service Desk to pick up a donation can and return it to the desk for totaling. 100% of the donation will go to the VFW and Legion to purchase and distribute dinners to local veterans and their families. We are asking for $1, $5 and $10 tax-exempt donations, but any amount of donations are accepted.

Turkey Bucks will run through Thanksgiving and Jewel will continue with Ham Bucks until Christmas. Ham Bucks will operate on the same basics as Turkey Bucks.

Please volunteer a few hours of your time to assist in this heart-warming endeavor!

The "New" VFW Auxiliary

You may have noticed some recent changes to this Blog - a new title, a new logo, and some new names for our links. These changes reflect the recent historical event to offer membership equality for all military families.

On July 20, 2015, delegates to the VFW’s 116th National Convention in Pittsburgh voted to to extend the same membership opportunity of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW to eligible males. On August 21, John A. Biedrzycki Jr., the National Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, added his official signature to the new congressional charter of the Auxiliary organization. According to a recent press release, “It’s an exciting time to be a member of the Auxiliary,” said VFW Auxiliary National President Francisca Guilford. “Women comprise nearly twenty percent of our nation’s military, and this change allows all spouses, fathers, grandfathers, sons, grandsons. and brothers to serve others in honor of their veteran.”

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW has changed its official name to the VFW Auxiliary. We are now the VFW Auxiliary to Post 5788.

In the near future, this Blog will be migrated to a new URL, reflecting this new membership profile. Accordingly, our e-mail address will also be changed. We will announce the migration when it is completed and will most likely keep both URLs in play for a period of time. Your Webmaster is a volunteer. Just give me a little time to get it done....

We look forward to this exciting time for our Auxiliary, and the furthering of our commitment to this nation’s veterans and military personnel.

Auxiliary August Monthly Meeting at American Legion Post 18

Heads Up! The Auxiliary August monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, August 6th at 6 pm (our regular day and time) at the Lockport American Legion John Olson Post 18 instead of at our home Post.

The move in this month's location is due in part to a scheduling conflict at our Post, but also to help acclimate us with the location of the Vietnam Moving Wall events, August 20 through 24. The Moving Vietnam Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be the focus of the August meeting. Note that this meeting may last a little longer than normal because of the amount of information to be covered.
